                             PROTECTIVE SERVICES

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION This program offers students training in law enforcement, emergency medical care, and fire fighting. The law enforcement course covers criminal justice theory, patrol operations, and crime scene investigation.  The emergency medical services program provides state certification as an EMT-Basic.  Paramedic assistant skills and basic anatomy and physiology are also included.  The fire fighting course provides introductory level training in basic fire fighting and rescue operations.  General physical fitness training will be conducted as part of the program to prepare students for pre - employment fitness standards.

REQUIRED UNIFORM AND EQUIPMENT:

Uniforms are required.  Due to the nature of these occupations, students will often become dirty during training.  Uniforms consist of a protective services shirt, khakis, black belt and black boots.

ACADEMIC/EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS:

Physical Skills:  Be able to bend at the knees and waist without difficulty.  Be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds to waist height. Possess good vision, speech, and fine motor skills.

Math Skills:  Perform practical application of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion, measurement, calculator and algebra.

Language/English Skills:  Read newspapers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries and encyclopedias.  Prepare business letters, expositions, summaries and reports, using prescribed formats.  Oral communication skills are mandatory to relate well with the public, crime victims, patients and peer professionals.

Science Skills: Demonstrate technical competencies in the utilization of measurement and the operation of scientific equipment. Be able to interpret the scientific process and principles of body science.

Computer Skills:  Be able to use the computer to perform basic data processing, spreadsheet, internet for research and operate trade related software at the application level.

Interpersonal Skills:  Ability to work effectively within a team, effective communication skills, good problem solving and decision-making skills.

 

RELATED POST-SECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES

One-year certificate programs for municipal police, paramedic and fire science. Two to four-year programs in Administration of Criminal Justice, Paramedical Science and Fire Science.  Graduate programs also exist for the above occupations.
